August 29th was another one of those days where I booked two shoots back to back. Both were late in the day to catch that perfect light. First was the Trends Magazine “Beat the Heat” Cover. After scouting a few locations I settled on the Fountain in front of the Scottsdale Resort (N.W. Corner of Scottsdale and Indian Bend Rd). The Tux was provided by The Clotherie. The dress was designed by Danese Creations and created just for this shoot. Then she recreated the dress for the fashion show at the Beat the Heat Event. The Models came from The Agency Arizona and did a great job. Styling by Margaret Merritt. Make-Up & Hair by Laura Flagler.

August 29th around 6:30 pm

The moment the Trends Cover shoot was over I had to run up to 94th Street and Shea to photograph the exterior of the HealthSouth Medical building. With the sun setting, and on a 25 foot electric lift that wobbled with every slight move, I took this photo for them.

August 29th around 7:20 pm

On August 26, 2011 I had 2 fun but very far apart (Scottsdale – Goodyear) shoots. One was to document the installation we helped have printed, mounted and a hanging system attached for the Phoenix Architects Office in Scottsdale, AZ.
Then later that same day … in crazy AZ Monsoon weather, notice the daughter’s flying hair, I shot a family portrait for their New Address card. Designed by Lichen Frank I think we hit this one out of the park.

Wow have we dropped the ball on posting Blogs or what? To make getting caught up fun I have decided to post our favorite image with a small back story of all our shoots since the last post on August 25th.

With that typed … On August 25, 2011 azTeen Magazine threw a SURPRISE Birthday Party for it’s Publisher Deb, right here in the studio. She was told that I had some potential advertisers that she had to meet. Little did she know that her employees, family and friends were hiding in the back. The Editor, Creative Director and staff ALSO created a Special Issue of azTeen and poster of all things Deb. We had a great time and I truly enjoy working with this fun and exciting magazine for Teens. Look for the Adrenaline Cover on news stands soon! It was shot and created by US!

Every July I dream of moving the office out of the studio in Old Town Scottsdale, renting a house with my family in the San Diego area and just shoot all the family portraits I can during that month. The last several years I have been able to come close to that dream. The office stays in Scottsdale but my family and I drive over to San Diego to photograph families on the beach’s of So. Cal. This year I shot from Coronado Island all the way up to Santa Barbara. This post is one of those shoots on Coronado Island.

The green topped dunes next to Hotel Del

I’m setting here in the studio getting ready for a Couple to stop by to discuss their Wedding Photography and an idea hit me for a blog post. Why don’t I answer the NUMBER 1 and NUMBER 2 questions that I am asked when people walk in the door? Well … I can do that.

Question # 1: How is Business? After answering this question the VERY next question is …

Question # 2: What Photography jobs do you shoot most?

A Little background on me:

I can honestly say that I am very lucky to be doing what I love. I moved to the Phoenix Valley in 1995 from New York City and Miami Beach, Florida where I worked for some amazing Photographers as their Assistant or Studio Manager. At that time I considered myself an Advertising, Commercial and Magazine Editorial Photographer. While I was drumming up business as Scott Foust Photographer I paid my bills shooting Model Testing and Family Portraits. It wasn’t long before I started to land some nice Advertising accounts. Then in 2002 I saw the economy take a drop and business slowed down. It was at that time I decided to “recession proof” my business as much as possible. My question to myself was,”When do people, who are not in advertising, want (or NEED) to hire a Photographer?” Answer: Weddings, High School Seniors and Newborn Portraits! After some time was spent learning and promoting these new Photography Business’s, Image-Industry Photography & Design Studio was born.We now shoot all of the above.

So HOW is Business? – I’m thrilled to say that even in this economy we are doing very well. Advertising has slowed as expected but something exciting is happening on the commercial side. Companies now have a huge number of inexpensive ways to market themselves. With eMail Marketing, Websites, BLOG’s, Social Networking, Internet Coupons, etc popping into the world a business can pay for some great photos and run with them! Oh! And did you know that people are still getting Married, graduating High School and … some people are even having babies!

I would like to think that I have suceeded in “recession proofing” my business. I’m far from it. But I’m not complaining.

AND what Photography jobs do you shoot most? (talking money here) – Right now I would say 35% Commercial, 35% Weddings / Events, 20% Family Portraits and 10% everything else.
