There’s just something magical about your newborn’s first week.  The grace.  The innocence.  The purity.  Yet this first week seems to so quickly pass … along with the rest of her life.

Image-Industry’s newest associate photographer Iryna Petersen excels in newborn photography.  She flawlessly captures baby’s innocence, affording you a lifetime of precious moments.  And while her classic education and international experience contribute to her exceptional prints, it’s her experience as a mom that infuses the “heart” in her photographs. We sat down with Iryna to learn more…

You have an incredible ability to photograph babies.  How did this develop?
 “Honestly, it comes from my own experience with my own child.  I understand the importance of that “just right” baby photo because I wanted those very photos of Maya.  She’s also enabled me to develop an unbelievable comfort with newborns, something few people possess.  But perhaps most importantly, I take photos as a mom first, photographer second; I approach every photograph as if it’s my own baby.  That level of patience and understanding matters, and it shows in the images.”

You mention comfort with newborns.  It seems a new mommy may have some hesitations about letting a complete stranger handle their baby – especially so early in his or her life.  How do you establish that trust?
 “That’s exactly what it is … trust.   Parents, especially mommies, tell me that they can immediately feel my passion and my energy.  And I feel strongly that it’s because I’m a mom.  I take my time and exercise an outstanding amount of patience with both babies and parents.  Newborn photography takes anywhere from two to three hours, so it’s important parents feels as if their child is in loving hands.  And she is!”

You say it’s critical to photograph a baby in their first week of life.  Does that window of time really matter much?
 “It does.  And if you don’t believe me, you’ll miss it and never get it back.  In this first week, there’s an unmatched innocence.  I can also pose him in a way that he’ll never pose again.  Soon, he’ll be more aware of his environment and responding to sights and sounds.  This awareness can disrupt that perfect pose.  

But that first week is a huge adjustment for any family.  It’s easy to understand how newborn photographs can slip away.  “I always recommend daddies-to-be, aunts, grandparents, friends … schedule a newborn photo shoot in Mommy’s last trimester.  It’s the last thing she’ll think of but an incredible gift for the family.  The precious pictures will be cherished for more than a lifetime.

August 30th we had a couple of shoots here in the Old Town Scottsdale Studio. First was a portrait of the 2011 Fabulous Phoenician for The Beat the Heat Event and Trends Magazine. In studio Model Test

August 29th was another one of those days where I booked two shoots back to back. Both were late in the day to catch that perfect light. First was the Trends Magazine “Beat the Heat” Cover. After scouting a few locations I settled on the Fountain in front of the Scottsdale Resort (N.W. Corner of Scottsdale and Indian Bend Rd). The Tux was provided by The Clotherie. The dress was designed by Danese Creations and created just for this shoot. Then she recreated the dress for the fashion show at the Beat the Heat Event. The Models came from The Agency Arizona and did a great job. Styling by Margaret Merritt. Make-Up & Hair by Laura Flagler.

August 29th around 6:30 pm

The moment the Trends Cover shoot was over I had to run up to 94th Street and Shea to photograph the exterior of the HealthSouth Medical building. With the sun setting, and on a 25 foot electric lift that wobbled with every slight move, I took this photo for them.

On August 27th I photographed Hunter who at that time was looking to be signed by a local Model and Talent Agency. After showing off this and other images we shot he was picked up by Ford. Congratulations Hunter!
